Excessive Downloading

Question: What do you mean by excessive downloading?
Answer: It means that one is using software, or a tabbed browser, or some other technique that creates, whether you save it to your computer or not, massive amounts of throughput (bandwidth) on my server. We set the the daily limit (threshold) at 250 megabytes. That's a lot of information. Way more data than you could do by simply navigating through. More than enough pictures that one could view and appreciate in one day.
Question: How are the sites at Curt Newbury Studios meant to be used?
Answer: We want people to enjoy the sites to the limit. Browse daily, if you like, through our sites. Save to your computer the pictures you really want. All by way of clicking on the links and going from one section of a site to another. The same way your would enjoy a book, one page at a time.
Question: So what is the harm in mass downloading?
Answer:   You probably have a water service. The water pressure needs to be high enough for you to wash dishes and and take a shower and water the lawn.
But one of your neighbors has got hold of some kind of gadget that phenomenally increases his water pressure and, while he is using this gadget, your water pressure will naturally drop. This makes for a bad situation, right.
So, your neighbor is mass downloading water, which cause you and the other neighbors grief. Your neighbor has sucked the life out of your water supply. You would probably want to do something to prevent that from happening, right?
Question: So, what can be done to make the websites enjoyable for all members?
Answer: We enlist the services of Pennywize to monitor the activities of all members. When one creates a great amount of bandwidth, Pennywize shuts that user off for a certain period of time. In our case, 24 hours.
Question: If a large number of people are on my server at one time and they are all using accessing the site properly, there is no perceptible change in how the server behaves.
Answer: When just one person is mass downloading, all the others on the server are slowed down until the mass downloading is finished. We serve our customers by making this time reasonably short.
Question: Is there a legitimate use for mass downloading software, tabbed browsers or other techniques?
Answer: Of course, there is. Often a company has some materials that it wants to go on the computers of their own personnel or their own customers for various reasons. Using these methods is great and harms no one.
